New Paintings by Nicholas Herbert

The works in Pneuma were very different. They are light, bright and ethereal; at moments they appear almost not to be there at all. But they are not images of nothing. On my second time of studying them in conversation with the artist, a remark attributed to the French composer, Claude Debussy, came to mind: ‘Music is the silence between the notes.’ It’s an enigmatic statement, but equally, these are enigmatic, rather haunting images. They are the artistic equivalent, perhaps, of the sound to be heard between the notes in a piece of music. They are reminiscent, too, of Robert Rauschenberg’s rubbed-out drawing, Erased de Kooning, and John Cage’s minimalist ‘silent’ composition, 4’ 33”.

5 Contemporary British Artists
at Stapleford Granary

An exhibition featuring work by five artists curated by Alan Kluckow at the Stapleford Granary in Cambridge. Exhibiting artists: Boo Mitford, Christopher Farrell, Nicholas Herbert, Sally Moore and William Balthazar Rose.

The phrase ‘contemporary’ when used together with ‘art’ in today’s world, usually presumes we are talking about the more extreme forms of the practice, but the dictionary lists the meaning as ‘belonging to or occurring in the present’ which is a reminder that contemporary also includes large numbers of artists who work in what would be called traditional or old fashioned ways. This number has been steadily growing in recent years as young painters and sculptors return to these tried and tested ways of expressing themselves, and this exhibition showcases a small selection of paintings by 5 practitioners who use traditional methods and materials to make their art.
Boo Mitford is the only one who could easily be categorised as an abstract artist, the others fall into what we loosely call realist or representational. However, one look at the styles and techniques used by the four representational painters in this exhibition shows us how diverse a small group of realists can be.
Sally Moore and William Balthazar Rose are narrative painters, Sally using herself as the featured model in all her work to tell stories about her life, real and imagined. William invents extraordinary visual tales, almost always featuring his favourite subject - chefs.
Nicholas Herbert and Christopher Farrell are probably best described as landscape artists, but the contrast in what they have to say about this subject could not be greater. Nick uses meticulous detail and a darker palette to carefully observe the mysteries of the rural countryside, while Chris employs a much brighter and energetic approach to record the buzz of cityscapes'.

Susan Leyland is one of the most respected and sought after contemporary equestrian sculptors. Susan’s work is collected and exhibited worldwide and her much admired War Horse Memorial to honour equine sacrifices during WWI stands adjacent to the Ascot Racecourse. The exhibition features a select group of recent sculpture, plus original and working drawings.

This is Nick Herbert's second solo exhibition in the gallery following his very successful one in 2016. The new paintings feature Italian and English landscapes. Art historian and author David Boyd Haycock says in his catalogue introduction that these paintings remind him of Turner's late watercolours, in which his landscape moves towards almost complete abstraction. This is a wonderful description of these small intricate beautifully painted pictures, which it gives us great pleasure to be exhibiting in the gallery.

Jean-Franck Baudoin (1870 -1961) was one of the last great French post impressionist painters. His career began in the Île de Ré, an island off La Rochelle where he was born. During the war of 1870, his family took refuge there and in this period Baudoin produced some of his most vibrant work.
This collection of works demonstrate Baudoin's uncomplicated vision of the world, summed up by his characteristic easy brushstroke, flirtation with light and colour
and mastery of composition.
